About the Book – Raising Your Money-Savvy Family For Next Generation Financial Independence

“How Will Your Kids Reach Financial Independence?”

That’s the question Doug Nordman and his spouse heard at so many personal-finance meetups and conferences. They finally asked their daughter, Carol Pittner: “What do you remember about us teaching you to manage your money?”

Carol lit up with her stories, and now they’re sharing them with your family.

Raising Your Money-Savvy Family For Next Generation Financial Independence

Raising Your Money-Savvy Family For Next Generation Financial IndependenceCarol and Doug show you how to motivate your kids to manage their money. Kids learn by making lots of mistakes. When you start teaching them at a young age, though, their mistakes are smaller (and cheaper) than years later when they’re in the workforce.

Raising Your Money-Savvy Family For Next Generation Financial Independence will help you validate your kids’ feelings about money, talk through their mistakes, and think of better ways to manage their money the next time.

Later you’ll help them find their own motivations to earn, save, and invest.

Carol and Doug share specific tactics that you can use with your own kids: finding bargains, profit-sharing, earning interest, learning about investing, and even saving for long-term goals like their first car. (Their details on the Kid 401(k) are worth the price of the book.)

They help you build your family’s rules for allowances, chores, and jobs. Your kids will learn to manage the money that you’d spend on raising them, and they’ll be even more motivated to save and earn to build their own wealth.

This is not just another parenting manual or child-development textbook. Doug and Carol share their stories in a back-and-forth narrative that helps you see how your kids might perceive your parenting. (Carol’s sections reflect her memories as a child and her perspective as a young adult– and as a new parent.) They show you what worked for them (and what didn’t) and they’ll give you many ideas to try with your family.

JL Collins’ foreword is a bonus for readers of his blog and his book The Simple Path To Wealth. He reflects on how he would have used the Money-Savvy Family book when he was raising his daughter!”

About the Authors:

Doug Nordman

Doug retired at age 41 after 20 years with the U.S. Navy’s submarine force. Today Doug Nordman is an enthusiastic surfer, an omnivorous reader, a martial arts student, and a veteran of many chaotic home-improvement projects.

He and his retired Navy Reserve spouse raised their daughter in Hawaii. Carol graduated from college on a Navy ROTC scholarship, served on an overseas destroyer and an aircraft carrier, and is now in the Reserves. Their son-in-law is on active duty. GrandDoug and Grandma also have the world’s cutest granddaughter. Life is really good and busier than ever as he and his family continue to discover the joys of financial independence.

Here is a more in-depth bio.

Carol Pittner

Carol Pittner was born and raised in Hawaii. She graduated from Rice University on a Navy ROTC scholarship with a degree in Civil Engineering, and then joined the Surface Warfare community. She’s sailed thousands of miles around the world on multiple ships before moving to the Reserves in 2019.

Now at home again, Carol and her active-duty spouse are rapidly approaching financial independence on a high savings rate, and they’re raising their Money-Savvy Family! Personal finance is an important family topic… almost as important as surfing.
